Department Chair - Associate or Full Professor Level (12-month appointment)

The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) at the University of Missouri College of Human Environmental Sciences seeks applicants for the position of Department Chair at the Associate or Full Professor Level (a 12-month appointment). An earned doctorate in human development and family science, or a related field, and a national reputation for excellence in scholarship (i.e., track record of external funding, top-tier research publications) and teaching are required. Candidates with successful administrative experience in academic leadership positions will be preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with scholarly expertise in the area of human development and family process across the lifespan that complement our program strengths.

The position involves leadership of a nationally recognized department of 22 ranked faculty and 53 unranked, staff, and adjunct employees, along with 12 Extension field positions. Units within the department include the Child Development Laboratory - a teaching and research laboratory that provides exemplary care and education for infants and young children in a licensed and accredited educational setting) and the Center for Family Policy and Research - which focuses on state and national grant-funded research, outreach, systems-support, and policy work). HDFS offers on-campus and online undergraduate and graduate courses in child, adolescent, and adult development; early childhood education; child life, and family science. The University of Missouri is a Research 1 university and a member of the prestigious AAU. The department is currently ranked in the top 10% nationally in Academic Analytics for research productivity. In addition to teaching and research, MU is a land-grant university. The department works to fulfill that land-grant mission by bringing university research to Missourians through Extension. The Department Chair is expected to fulfill administrative duties, participate in advancement activities, be an active researcher, and teach one course per year.
