GOOD NEWS
Friday, 05/16/2008
Every week we intend to share with you all of the good things that are happening to HDFS faculty members, students, alumni, and friends. Please do not be shy about sending us your GOOD NEWS:
This is it for the year! Congratulations, new MU graduates! Don’t forget to keep sharing your good news with us over the summer – see you in the Fall.
Travel News
A few months ago Marilyn Coleman sent an email to the graduate student listserve that included several international opportunities. One of these was to go to South Korea for a month this summer to teach English, set up through the MU Asian Affairs Center and the Government of South Korea. New Child Life graduate Sandy Bruner applied and was accepted. She leaves mid-July to teach 6th and 7th graders alongside a Korean teacher (who knows English). There are about 30 other MU grads going and they will be joined by the same number of grads from Oregon State. All expenses are paid plus a small stipend. Congratulations, Sandy! Have fun and learn a lot!
Sandy tells us that when she returns from Korea she will be looking for a "real" job in Child Life.

No Wonder We are Tired
Dean Stephen Jorgensen (and HDFS Professor), told co-chairs Jean Ispa and Larry Ganong this week that HDFS generated 23.12% of the College’s student credit hours in academic year 2007-2008. Good work!
Dr. Larry Ganong has been appointed by UM Vice President Steve Graham to the University of Missouri Manual Pacheco Award Committee. This award recognizes academic leadership, and is named after the former UM system President.
Milestones
Melissa Scheer completed her masters' degree in HDFS this week. Congratulations, Melissa!
Papers and Posters Accepted at NCFR
There will no doubt be more acceptances coming, but graduate students Tyler Jamison and Mindy Markham received word this week that their proposals to present research were accepted for the National Council on Family Relations' Annual Conference in November. Marilyn Coleman and Larry Ganong are co-authors of Mindy's poster. Congratulations, Tyler and Mindy!
More to Korea
Denise Mauzy, HDFS instructor and staff member of the Center for Family Policy and Research, informs us that Alli Stramschror is going to Korea with Sandy Bruner and other MU folks to teach English. She is taking leave from her position with OPEN (A CFPR project), but will return in August. Congratulations, Alli!
New Contracts for the Center
The Center for Family Policy and Research and Center Director Kathy Thornburg have obtained renewals of several grants. They are: The Starting Up or Expanding Early Childhood Centers in Missouri project, and contracts with state agencies DSS and DESE for the Professional Achievement and Recognition System (PARS). Congratulations, Kathy and the CFPR team!
